Site Review: Salamandastron
By: Kathryn
After weeks of sleepless nights, Martin of the Long Patrol has finally completed his latest project - a new members-only page filled with enough activities to sharpen any ROCer's Redwall knowledge!
When I started exploring the activities Martin had created, I was amazed at the quality. Although many of the activities can be seen at other sites, such as an Art Contest and Trivia Contest, they all possess a certain individualism that I admire. The Art Contest, for example, isn't just your run-of-the-mill contest; it's a "Rackety-Tam Art Contest." Since there isn't a picture or physical description of Rackety [yet], the idea is to let your imagination guide your hand, and draw the latest character based on this small description by BJ: "Sounds like a real brawler, doesn't he? He came from the north with Wild Dougie Plum, a little Highland squirrel with a thick brogue."
Motivation is key to a club becoming successful. If a member desires to be ranked number one on "Redwall: Warlords," chances are they'll keep playing until they are. In the "Trivia Contest" the idea is to correctly answer five monthly questions for sixth months to become the "Redwall Trivia Champion" and receive an online prize!
One of Martin's favourite activities has to be the "Long Patrol Yearbook." Here, members can "immortalize" themselves into the Long Patrol by writing a small (or large) message that will be displayed on the page for as long as it exists. Basically, it will be there long after you are not. ;o)
"Who Wants to Be a Chesnutaire?" is my personal favourite, however. A take-off on the popular television show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" this contest will get even the most knowledgeable ROCer wanting to phone a friend! Sadly, that is not an option, and ROCer's will just have to tough it out to pursue their "chesnutaire" dreams! Four possible answers will appear on the screen, if you choose the correct answer you advance to the next, if you don't, a funny little message will appear congratulating you on losing. As you advance, the questions become harder and harder. I myself made it to the one million dollar question, and selected the wrong one!
These are only a few of the activities Salamandastron has in store, but you'll have to check it out for yourself to see them all! For those of you that are lucky enough to possess Long Patrol memberships, you'll most likely have seen the Salamandastron page. For those of you who do not belong to the Long Patrol, you'll have to wait until applications open up again (Martin was accepting applications last month, but that's over now). Sorry folks!
The site design itself is rather simplistic, which is what Martin wanted. A firm believer in the quality of a site over "flashy-ness," Martin decided to keep the layout in the same format of the main page, but altered the colour scheme for some added flair! Overall, I found this site to be extremely good; the quality of each activity shines, and I'm sure every ROCer will enjoy this latest addition to the community.
