Whatever happened to the ROC?

Postby Slagar on Sun Jan 31, 2010 6:01 am

I'm not bewailing it or anything, this is something I've been wondering about and it'd be neat to hear some thoughts from people who know more about it than I do. Does there still seem to be an actual "online community" for Redwall?

Heck, is there still much of an online community for anything - at least in the way that there used to be? Obviously the Redwall series still has fans, and the odds are pretty good that a percentage of them are using the internet to express this. What I'm really wondering about is the state of the fansite, as opposed to expressions of fandom within the context of broader, automated services (your DeviantART, Youtube, etc). I saw these sites as being the essential building blocks of the online community, but where are they now? Geocities died an ignonimous death; I don't notice Angelfire sites & the like showing up among search results anymore. Is it just that I don't see fansites anymore because I'm not looking for them, or has Web 2.0 and social media kind of supplanted whatever outlet those sites used to provide?

Again, this is just me being curious. The only real downside I can see to a shift in this direction is the loss of that implicit "do-it-yourself" mentality that used to go hand-in-hand with making things for the internet. I think that had some fun and educational value to it.

You know, I was going to argue that on the grounds that the Wiki is just one site, and that it's been around for a couple of years... but now that I actually look at it, you're right. It seems like everything the "ROC" ever was has pretty much been absorbed by the site, and it does seem to be active as hell. Total paradigm shift, but you're right, it's all still there.

Intriguing!

In addition, discussions (of the forum-y nature) have largely been supplanted by Facebook, Twitter, and other forms of social media.

I'm sorta attempting to make a fansite with webs .com..................... Haven't updated it in a while though.......

There are some true ROC sites left though, there's a few really good ones, I just can't remember the names as of right now.

Well, the Redwall survivor games are still alive and kicking. Midnight Mossflower, Questors Bold V, and RedVenture 5 happened last year with great success (about half the amount of reviewers as, say, QBIV, but there was still a very active audience), and The Emperor's Decree II is happening now. Oh, and Redscape too, which I think might actually still be running?

The only problem with the survivor contest sites is that they're basically most active up until the contestants are selected. Then a bunch of people who put up a few reviews in the beginning basically slip out hoping the contestants won't notice (**stabbities them**), and then, once the contest's done, everyone just kind of trickles out, leaving the site dormant until it hosts another round. :P

But yes, my site is still active (not the RV5 site so much, but the RSGC).

Yes, we are in fact still running, despite all outward appearances. As a matter of fact, we actually had another story post a couple of days ago.

Does anyone know what ever happened to DAB? The Voy forum thing is still active, and they said they had a new host and they would reactivate the site soon, but I guess they aree just procrasting and not doing anything any time soon.

If one were to peek around closely on Facebook, they would notice that there are many "fan" pages devoted to fandom. Name it and chances are it exists. Including Terrouge. =P

I am suprised that there are so many sites alive and kicking. I am happy for those people who get something out of it. Personally, I cannot read Redwall now because I get bored. It doesn't possess the higher-order thinking I crave in a novel. It is not that I read Redwall series voraciously - I ate up those books!

There's a Terrouge group and ROC and Redwall MUCK Alumni groups, as well, I know for certain.

I would join the Terrouge group but frankly I am a little embarrassed to do so. =P
